Sawdust Art Festival circa 1978
|
Born during the spirit of the 1960's, the Sawdust
Art Festival came into being as a revolt against institutions its artists
felt had become rigid and counterproductive. The artists whose first protest
show would later become the Sawdust Art Festival were objecting to the jurying
system that had excluded them from a popular local art show. They felt the
judges had rewarded the traditional and conventional and rejected the fresh
and unusual. Actual sawdust was put down on the dirt to keep down the dust
(as is done today!) and the show eventually took its name from the cozy effect
this created.
Today, the Sawdust Art Festival is an immensely popular, unique art show dedicated
to the enjoyment and education of art in the community. Over 180 Laguna Beach
artists come together each year to display and sell their work. Visitors may
participate in "hands on" mini classes with artists, watch demonstrations
as artists share their experience, and may read the educational
displays that each artist puts up in the booth. Special activities are available
for small children! This is a wonderful opportunity for people to enhance
their understanding and appreciation of the arts, have a good time and bring
home a new found treasure! Continous entertainment adding to the festive atmosphere
includes live music, magicians, jugglers, belly dancers and more. Several
outdoor cafes and a saloon offer a variety of refreshments.
