Since
it was founded as a nonprofit corporation in 1999, Project Access has used a variety
of methods and created many new partnerships to bring health, education, and vocational
resources to low-income families living in affordable rental housing developments,
providing these families with the tools they need to gain self-sufficiency. Project
Access presently serves the residents of eleven low-income housing communities
through its on-site learning and resource centers and, at sites that are without
available facilities, through its Learning Center Without Walls program.
Project
Access offers a service-delivery platform that reaches dense clusters of low-income
families at the places they live, thereby eliminating many of the barriers that
these families face in their attempts to attend programs located elsewhere in
the community, such as a lack of information, language, or transportation. The
parents of the children receiving after-school help often see and speak with the
Project Access Service Coordinators on a regular basis; and many of them are enrolled
in programs such as ESL, computer education, and parenting-skills that result
in an effective, comprehensive enhancement of their children's academic prospects.
